SOTU Lost in Translation

Both Roger Clegg and I were pleased by the White House's early remarks on the importance of immigrants being encouraged to learn English.

Alas, clear sentences such as "Every new citizen has an obligation to learn the English language and the customs and values that define our Nation" were confined to the White House State of the Union Fact Sheet on Immigration. The President's spoken remarks to Congress were far less resounding: "We need to uphold the great tradition of the melting pot that welcomes and assimilates new arrivals."

Given the Democrats held the first State of the Union preview in Spanish tonight, while the White House made its endorsement of immigrant assimilation available in both English and Spanish, the good old melting pot is in serious trouble.
