As part of its agreement with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education, Tucson Unified School District will:
  • Develop a written plan to ensure compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to provide meaningful access to all Limited English Proficient (LEP) students seeking services at its Family Resource and Wellness Centers;

  • Identify the non-English languages spoken by its LEP students through information on a district-maintained database;

  • Specify how it will provide language assistance to LEP students and families seeking assistance from the centers, either in person or by phone;

  • Prohibit the use of adult family members or friends as interpreters, unless "exigent" circumstances exist or the client wishes to decline interpretation services paid for and provided by TUSD;

  • Have its centers post and maintain multilanguage signs stating that interpreters are available upon request at no cost for any of their services;

  • Have its centers develop multilanguage posters, cards or other tools to allow LEP students to identify themselves and request an interpreter;

  • Provide LEP policies and procedures to all center staff and offer training on Title VI obligations;

  • Train center staff on LEP policies and procedures and provisions of the agreement;

  • Have policies and procedures for evaluating the competency of all persons, including volunteers, who will be interpreters;

  • Offer interpreters annual training, including ethics and confidentiality requirements;

  • Submit an annual report the next two years to assure continued compliance with the agreement.
